Auckland, a bird's eye view

Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city, with a total estimated population of 1,658,900 in the wider Auckland region – around a third of the country’s population. A diverse city, Auckland is home to more than 200 ethnicities and is the fourth most multicultural city in the world. The Māori language name for Auckland is Tāmaki Makaurau, “the place desired by many” – it was a land fought over for its abundant natural resources, fertile soils and harbours full of seafood. Today, it is ranked the third most liveable city in the world (Mercer Quality of Living Survey 2017).
