Whalewatch
Majestic and serene, the whales at Kaikoura will fill you with wonder. A deep ocean canyon passes close to the Kaikoura shore. It provides lots of food for the deep-diving sperm whales, so they live here throughout the year. Seven other species visit at different times, including humpbacks, southern rights and the mighty blue whales.
Whale Watch Kaikoura is a multiple national and international award winning New Zealand nature-based tourism company owned and operated by the indigenous Ngāti Kuri people of Kaikōura, a Maori sub-tribe of the South Island’s larger Ngāi Tahu Tribe.
Whale Watch was formed in 1987 at a time when Maori were casualities of Kaikōura’s declining economy.
It has been an immense success generating jobs and allowing the local Māori community to do what it does best – hosting visitors and sharing stories in this internationally renowened whale-watching location.
